ROY OWENS

Originally from New South Wales, Roy and his wife Harriet moved to Tasmania in 2020 as climate refugees following Roy’s  retirement.

Roy's career began in the insurance industry working for Colonial Mutual Life, Occidental Life and finally Guardian Assurance PLC where he occupied the role of New South Wales Administration Manager.

 Having been a senior volunteer with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) for 15 years Roy then became a salaried officer within the RFS with the rank of Inspector finally retiring in 2019 with 45 years service. Upon retirement Roy was given the honorary rank of Inspector (retired) by the Rural Fire Service Commissioner. During his career with the NSW RFS Roy was responsible for various activities such as,

  • Infrastructure Management

  • IT Systems administration

  • Business Planning

  • Procurement

  • Risk Management Planning

  • Operational duties, performing the role of Incident Controller at many large scale incidents.

  • Membership of various Committees working alongside other Emergency and Land Management representatives

  • Managing the Service Level Agreement between Local and State Government.

Academically Roy has studied Horticulture at Ryde Horticultural College and Land Resource Management at University of Sydney.

Roy's hobbies include Fishing, Archery, Woodwork and Computer systems.

Currently Roy is Vice President of the Penguin Mens Shed.
